NEW ALBANY SAFETY TOWN NAMED 2020 COMMUNITY CONNECTION AWARD HONOREES
New Albany, OH: New Albany Safety Town was launched in 2004 with the support of Key Bank and the New Albany Women’s Network through the New Albany Community Foundation. Since then, nearly 5,500 children have graduated. The New Albany Chamber of Commerce recognized Safety Town as its Community Program of the Year, and continued support from our sponsors has been integral to the success of this now well-established program.
Safety Town is a safety educational camp held each summer for children entering kindergarten or first grade in the upcoming fall school year. All lessons are taught by State Certified Teachers, New Albany Police Officers, and Plain Township Fire Department Firefighters along with teen volunteers, subject matter experts and community partners.
Throughout the two-week, eight day session, children learn 10 safety topics and stories, games, songs, videos and books reinforce the safety skills being taught each day in the classroom. By using a “hands-on” approach, children absorb important information and have fun at the same time.
Each day, the children have the opportunity to practice bike and pedestrian safety as they ride special Safety Town vehicles on the streets of Safety Town’s Adventureland. The children also take field trips to The New Albany Police Station and The Plain Township Fire Department. The following topics are covered:
Daily Topics: Bike & Helmet Safety, Pedestrian Safety and Playground Safety
Week One Topics: Personal Safety, Police / Emergency Safety with Field Trip to the New Albany Police Department, School Bus Safety, Gas Safety with Digger Dog, Animal Safety, and Water Safety
Week Two Topics: Fire Prevention, Home Safety with a field trip to the Plain Township Fire Station, School Bus Safety, Poison Control
Week two concludes with a Graduation Ceremony attended by the Mayor of New Albany and/or a City Council Member, the New Albany Chief of Police, and the Plain Township Fire Chief along with the police officers, firefighters and teaching staff who spend the 8 days with the children. Families are invited to attend on the last day of camp where highlights of the camp are presented, songs are performed by the campers and each camper receives a graduation certificate.
The New Albany Founders Day Community Connection Award was established in 2008 to recognize and showcase the outstanding work and services performed by an area non-profit civic group that serves our community and surrounding area.
